Van Kniest, Inc. was founded in 1975 by current owner and president, John H. Kniest, Jr.

Brought to the area by the U.S. Army in 1967 and convinced to stay by his Virginia born wife, Jack has made Williamsburg his home for the past 40+ years. He earned a master's degree in education from The College of William and Mary, but instead of following his expected path to classroom teaching, he branched out from his early orange crate and sailboat building days to well built homes.

Together with his employees, subcontractors, and vendors, Jack guides his clients through the maze of alternatives-and their consequences-involved in new construction or major remodeling projects. Maintaining in-house framing and painting crews ensures a level of control necessary to deliver the finishes demanded in the Williamsburg custom home market. Van Kniest was pleased to be voted "Best Homebuilder" in The Virginia Gazette's Best of Williamsburg 2007 competition.

Part of the Ford's Colony Preferred Builder program since its inception, Van Kniest has completed a variety of projects in Ford's Colony including custom homes, the two model homes, and the Ford's Colony Belvedere at the Roundabout. Other fine examples of Van Kniest work can be seen in Governor's Land at Two Rivers, Kingsmill on the James, Richmond Hill, Yorkshire, Holly Hills, and many similar neighborhoods. Previous customers are willing to share their Van Kniest building experience and often open their homes for a first hand look at the quality of work to be expected. Van Kniest stays involved in the local community and supports programs such as Child Development Resources, Housing Partnerships, The Rita Welsh Adult Literacy Program, and Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg. Jack has served on numerous county and regional task forces and is currently a member of the JCC Green Building Design Round Table. He has participated in green building seminars both with the Peninsula Housing & Builders Association and EarthCraft Virginia. He was a key player in organizing the Williamsburg Community Builders Association and served as one of its early chairmen. Van Kniest is a member of the Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance, the National Association of Home Builders, and the Peninsula Housing and Builders Association.
