Community and Fitness Centers in Williamsburg
James City County / Williamsburg Community Center: Originally opened in 1986 as the James City/Williamsburg Recreation Center at 33,000 square feet, the Center was expanded in 1997 and underwent a transformation from a recreation center to a place for the entire community.
It now encompasses 84,000 square feet and houses a multitude of amenities including new space for community activities in addition to the physical activity areas. The Center hosts numerous events and activities in its community meeting rooms, senior and teen lounges, and community living room. It also provides access to outstanding fitness equipment and programs, aquatic facility operations and programs, and basketball, volleyball and racquetball for those who become patrons of the Center.
The Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex: When the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex (WISC) opened its doors in 2000, there was a sense of anticipation - after all, this was the first and only facility of its kind in the area - where sports, recreation and fun could take place all under one roof.
The WISC provides a climate-controlled environment giving members an opportunity to escape unpleasant weather conditions without missing a beat.
Founder and President, Chris Haywood: “With the unpredictable nature of the weather, it made perfect sense to construct a covered sports center - where kids and adults could enjoy a wide variety of sports, recreation and fitness - all under one roof.”
With its unique state-of-the-art 77,000 square foot indoor facility, the WISC is home to two multi-sport indoor fields, a fully equipped Fitness Center, a first class Gymnastics Center and our Kid's Club Program which consists of a fully-licensed Pre-School and a Before & After School Center.
WISC also offers an unequaled setting for special events including birthday parties, corporate functions and trade shows.
Thier professional staff continues to strive to serve all ages of the community by offering high quality programs to ensure an experience that is second to none.

Shoring Ryu Karate: The Shorin-Ryu Karate School is Williamsburg’s premier training center for traditional karate- an alternative to the costly, contract-based martial art schools found today. The benefits of our training go beyond powerful self-defense skills. Weight loss, stress relief, whole body fitness, focus and confidence make our classes an invaluable investment for families and individuals.
We are a big family at our club and costs are kept extremely affordable for individuals and families. Our school is the USA headquarters for Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate Butokukan Association in Okinawa, Japan under grandmaster Sokuichi Gibu, Hanshi/10th degree black belt.
Our Chief Instructor is John Spence, who is also a well-known 5th Grade teacher here in Williamsburg. “Our greatest responsibility is to teach martial arts as it has been passed down to us from our teachers in Japan. Traditional karate gives kids and adults incredible discipline, self-control, and confidence and these things build leaders in our community and schools.”
Over 160 adult and youth students practice weekly at the karate school where classes are offered for ages 5 and up.
